Happy Fall Holidays Honoring the Spirits

Cemetery Skate

The weather has been sunny and warming up in the afternoon to near 50 degrees.  These conditions I take advantage of and go for outdoor skates.  With the holidays devoted to souls and spirits upon us, I celebrated Halloween, Day of the Dead, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day by rolling by this graveyard. The gray tombstones are set against the fall backdrop of deep blue sky and the gold-brown foliage that refuses to leave their branches.

Notice the gorgeous red burning bush towards the end…….(no, I didn’t see Moses).

Because of these candy focused holidays, I want to share a treat that I made for a Halloween party.  The original idea came from the blog, “Just A Taste” and here is the post

My 10 year daughter assisted me.  She declared that the bittersweet chocolate wasn’t sweet enough (despite the numerous candies we planned on using to decorate) so we substituted in 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips.  My 7 year old daughter approved.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of chocolate chips (we used 2 cups bittersweet and 1 cup semisweet)
  • Assorted  candies for decorating

Directions:  Melt chocolate chips in double boiler then pour onto parchment paper.  Allow to cool slightly then decorate with candy.  Cool completely then cut or break into random sized pieces (I used a pizza cutter).

I took my batch to an outdoor evening Halloween party and they disappeared into the night with little goblins.  The candies I used have a fall flair to them so I could reciprocate this and share at Thanksgiving.  This recipe could be implemented into any holiday:  think red and green candies for Christmas, pink for Valentine’s Day, and Easter–wow, just throw the whole basket into the chocolate.
