At Christmas, I set up two trees in my house.
One is artificial and the second is a real evergreen. The artificial is decorated with all our store bought, aka “artificial” ornaments. The freshly cut tree I keep natural with white lights and homemade decorations. Last year I dried orange slices in my oven. After they cooled, I strung a piece of thread through each one. I try to hang them in front of a bulb on the string of lights for a glowing orange effect. They look beautiful, especially in the dark of winter. I wrapped the dried fruit carefully at the end of the season and was able to reuse them this past December.
This year I made a slightly smaller version. My daughter loves Cuties which are miniature citrus fruits with a sweeter flavor. They sliced and dried just as well.

After the Christmas season, I enjoy leaving out what I refer to as my “winter” decorations. I pack up the red and green colors, the Santa and reindeer icons, and my manger display. I leave out greenery and white lights and snowflakes and snowmen. It really helps keep my spirit light when the winter in New Hampshire feels like it will never end. Of course my evergreen tree was no longer freshly cut by the beginning of January. Sadly I had to remove it from my home and lay it down in our woods after saying a prayer of thanks for its beauty and the joy it gave to my home. But I transferred the orange slices to my winter tree, a four foot tall artificial pine topiary, which stands in my entryway.
To make dried Orange Slice Ornaments:
Slice oranges 1/8-1/4 inch thick. Place on a single layer on a cookie sheet. Bake in a 210-225 degree oven for about 2 hours. Check on oranges occasionally to make sure they are they are not over done. Oranges will turn brown if they are left to dry in the oven too long. String thread through each slice, long enough to hang, and tie the end together to make a loop. These oranges also look beautiful placed in bowls for a table decoration.
