Three Challenge Hashtag Pinafore

Originally, this project was intended for the #sewbibs challenge, but I missed that deadline.  But that’s ok, because now I will share for the #memademay2019 and #makeyourstash.

I sewed this York Pinafore pattern by Helen’s Closet with fabric I purchased at Mood in NYC over a year and a half ago.  I was glad to find a colorful backdrop for the black and white flowers on this gloomy day.

#makeyourstash challenge:  This focuses on sustainability.  The description invites sewists to “make garment(s) that we will love and wear, using fabric that has been in the stash for more than 6 months.”  This idea was created in 2018 by Kate at “A Time to Sew” and Pilar @pilar_bear.

#memademay2019 challenge:  This one focuses on personal style by integrating a handmade wardrobe (from 1 to 2 pieces or an entire closet!) into everyday life.  The challenge was created 10 years ago by Zoe from So, Zo…what do you know? who encourages sewists to give thoughtful consideration as to the “why” behind their creations.

This fabric has a very distinct graphic flower pattern so I wanted the kangaroo pocket to match up exactly with the body of the dress.  This required me to configure the scraps accordingly!  So the pocket ended up lower than instructed, but it blends.  I purchased this fabric without a creative plan……so I didn’t heed the classic advice of purchasing extra to match up plaids, strips, and patterns!

The York pinafore pattern makes a lovely and fun garment.  It also provided great sewing instructions for solidifying skills using bias tape and French seams–two bonus sewing classes in one pattern packet!
