This nettle and oatstraw combination is one of the first three tinctures that I learned to make many moons ago. This is a simple overall body tonic, and these two herbs are popular and easy to source.
A tincture is a extract involving herbs that soak in a menstruum, or base liquid of alcohol or vinegar. I regularly use vodka as my menstruum. I place the herbs in a glass jar, cover them with the menstruum, and let it sit in a sunny place for four weeks. The liquid is strained of the herbs and then rebottled. Mountain Rose Herbs has an excellent tutorial on how to make a tincture.

Nettle has been used in Chinese medicine as a “long life” herb. It is rich in vitamins and minerals. I originally began using nettle to help alleviate my symptoms during allergy and hay fever season. (Yes, the infamous stinging nettle! Use the dry version of this plant to avoid this discomfort.) Besides being a whole body tonic, nettles are great for skin and hair, and they lessen PMS and menopausal symptoms.
Another whole body tonic, oatstraw helps improve overall health. As a mucilaginous herb, it strengthens the nervous system. Oatstraw supports bone health and is good for male and female reproductive systems.

For dosing, I follow the guidance of Rosemary Gladstar that is found in her book Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health. I love this book! It has been a regular reference on my bookshelf for many years now.
I have played around for a while now with herbs which also includes my own research. The information contained in this post is what I have found pertaining to my needs. They are the discoveries of my research and experiences. The rule of thumb before deciding to use any herbal or natural remedy is to find three sources of information. Always consult a health care provider before introducing any new health regimens to your body.
