Hummingbird Happiness

Watching hummingbirds drink from the feeder off my porch is……kind of addicting, or mesmerizing.  My husband and my daughters enjoying these little birds too.  Even my dog, who thinks it’s her duty to chase every chipmunk out of the yard, will sit quietly on the porch and just observe.

The hummingbird is the smallest bird with 320 different species having been identified.  Most are in South America with 12 residing regularly in the United States and Canada.  Consulting my trusty bird resource that resides on my porch, I have learned that the only hummingbird regularly seen in Maine/New Hampshire is the Ruby-throated variety.  With their wings beating 53 times per second, males (with their splash of red)  and females (white neck) have visited my feeder.

My trusty resource guide

My husband purchased this hummingbird feeder for me this spring at Lowe’s.  I love the color of this blue glass.  You can find it online here.

It super easy to make your own nectar for the feeder.  You are making a variation of simple sugar actually.  The ratio of sugar to water is 1 to 4:  1 part sugar to 4 parts water.  So for the batch currently present in my feeder, I used 1/2 cup white sugar and 2 cups of water.  Combine the sugar and water in a pot on the stove.  Heat the water only until the sugar dissolves.  Let the mixture cool before adding it to the feeder.
