Mid-Day Refresher

This quick personal care recipe with essential oils was born from the silver lining of that icky feeling I get in the middle of the day. (Always look for the silver lining!) Or in the middle of a night (I’m a registered nurse). My skin feels oily, dirty, and tired. And so does my brain.

This recipe has a base of witch hazel and distilled water. Then I add in a blend of essential oils. This version has geranium and grapefruit.

Witch hazel is a clear liquid distilled from the twigs and bark of the shrub Hamamelis virginiana which is native to the North Eastern United States. It was used for centuries by Native Americans for numerous skin ailments. As a widely used cosmetic ingredient, the liquid can be applied directly to the skin to utilize its toning and astringent benefits. Toners are important in a skin care regimen because they remove impurities cleansers leave behind such as bacteria, dirt, and makeup.

Distilled water is created by boiling water and then condensing the collected steam back into a liquid. This process removes impurities and minerals from the water. If you don’t have the distilled variety on hand, tap water can certainly be used in this recipe.

Geranium oil is a must-have for skin care routines. For oily and combination skin, geranium will bring balance to your complexion and keep oil production under control. This floral oil was used by the Egyptians to promote beautiful, radiant- looking skin. Today, this potent oil is still used in high-end perfumes and skin care products and is also a key ingredient for healthy, beautiful hair. Aromatically, the smell of Geranium helps release negative emotions. Diffuse it for a happy mood–its uplifting scent promotes feelings of peace and hope.

Grapefruit oil is extracted from the peel of the grapefruit, not its pulp or flesh. Unlike other citrus oils, grapefruit oil does NOT contain the photosensitivity of other citrus oils so it’s a great substitute when immediate exposure to the sun is unavoidable! Grapefruit essential oil is rich in antioxidants, especially vitamin C and is often added to creams and lotions to help brighten the complexion, treat acne and prevent oily skin. Like other citrus oils, grapefruit oil has antidepressant properties that may provide a relaxing and uplifting feeling. It also has stimulating effects on your brain, which may make you more alert.

Other great oils that support your skin to try include lavender, manuka, tea tree, frankincense, patchouli, and chamomile. This recipe is easily customizable to suit your needs!
