Living in New Hampshire, I have learned to hold off on washing all my family’s winter gear until May 1st. Late spring snow storms are not unheard of, and with kids, the pants and jackets are still used to get one last snowman built before it melts the next day in the warm spring sun. One year I made a bold move which backfired on me! I washed everything the 3rd week in April. And yes, I believe it was April 26th, it snowed! I suppose I could have told my daughters that they would not be able to go outside in the snow, but wow, talk about sucking all the fun out of the carnival. So out they went, and then I just did round 2 of snow gear cleansing.
However, some pieces are hard to clean and definitely not able to fit in the washing machine. Snow/ski/snowboarding boots are the largest group. Gloves and ski bags always need to be wiped down. I have found that spring air and sunshine make excellent “cleansers” for sweaty and smelly equipment. I sit everything outside, and then spritz them with a homemade “Boot Spray.” This process freshens everything up before packing it away for 6 months. I have also used this spray for other hard to clean sports gear like goalie gloves, softball gloves, roller derby pads, and equipment bags.
My absolute favorite essential oil to do this with is Purification. It is a lively and clean-smelling blend of Citronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Lavandin, and Myrtle. Purification has some powerful cleansing properties, both on surfaces and in the air. Just diffusing it makes it seems like you cleaned your entire home.
