Wisdom from the Wisemen

“The Magi are not seeking the star as a physical object in space. They want to be illuminated by its meaning, not its glow.”

The Rev. Terrance W. Klein, A Homily for the Epiphany of the Lord

Today celebrates the arrival of the Magi to pay homage to the newborn King. They bestow upon him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Epiphany is another celebration of Light for this time of darkness in the Northern Hemisphere. We have already honored Yule, the Winter Solstice, Hannukah, and Christmas, all which have light as their main point of celebration.

As we end the Twelve Days of Christmas, it seems fitting to close with the symbol of light as the star. This is another opportunity for us to focus inwards. As with the New Year’s celebration, we can reflect on the past year, let it go, and set our intentions for the future. As the Magi had the star to guide them, we can let our spiritual intuition light our path forward.

The precious gifts of the Wisemen from thousands of years ago can be used by us in similar ways today. Of course gold, right?! But I’m more referring to the tree resins of frankincense and myrrh. In their essential oil forms, they are easily accessible and practical for daily use. In the world of oils, spikenard is used to represent gold.

Resin oils, like frankincense and myrrh, open the mind to help with focus and clarity. They are the oils to reach for when making spiritual connections. They also assist in processing out the garbage to allow for new thought patterns. Physically, they protect the body’s health starting at a cellular level to provide immune, respiratory, sleep, and skin support. Add these oils to your diffuser and breathe deep, meditate, pray, journal, and relax.

Here are some blends combining oils commonly used in biblical times (I listed out the oils from ancient scripture that are in each blend):

Abundance: Contains frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon bark, and spruce along with 4 other oils. An essential blend to help attract positive energy and well, abundance.

Egyptian Gold: Contains frankincense, myrrh, spikenard, hyssop, cedarwood, cinnamon bark along with 3 other oils. This essential oil blend contains oils used in ancient Egypt for several purposes including mummification. It is very emotionally balancing.

Exodus II: Contains cassia, myrrh, cinnamon bark, calamus, hyssop, galbanum, frankincense, spikenard. Made entirely of biblical essential oils, this blend is formulated after the Holy Anointing Oil mentioned in Exodus 30.

3 Wise Men: Contains sandalwood, frankincense, spruce, and myrrh along with one other oil. This essential oil blend is spiritually elevating. It releases negative emotions and energy.

See, darkness covers the earth,
and thick clouds cover the peoples;
but upon you the Lord shines,
and over you appears his glory

(Is 60:2)
