It Wasn’t Me!

Oh, the bathroom! It’s always a surprise of smells in that room. There’s the minty toothpaste, the invigorating body wash, the flowery body lotion, and –ahem–the toilet.

And we have all made it stink at some point!

I always leave a bottle of homemade air freshener of the essential oils of the season on the sink. But here’s a recipe that works in the bowl before you go. Use whatever essential oils and combinations you find the most cleansing. I used Eucalyptus Radiata and Lemon because I noticed that I had an excess of these two oils at the time of making this recipe.

Vegetable glycerin is a natural compound obtained from vegetable fats such as corn, soy, palm, and coconut. It is an odorless and colorless liquid with a thick consistency and sweet taste. Vegetable glycerin is a popular ingredient in oral health care, medicine, beauty, and herbal remedies. Because it is considered an emulsifier, it helps to blend the oils and water which is appreciated in making many natural beauty products. Many DIYers like glycerin because it thickens the consistency of their homemade products, is a key ingredient in homemade soaps, and also acts as a preservative to give a longer shelf life.

There are so many properties of vegetable glycerin that make it a wonderful ingredient to add to skin care recipes! As a humectant, it hydrates skin by attracting and pulling in moisture, and vegetable glycerin provides a skin barrier as well to prevent moisture loss. But it is non-comedogenic, so it moisturizes without clogging pores. Its emollient properties help to smooth the skin. Glycerin helps to heal and soothe irritated skin with a cooling sensation.

For this toilet spray recipe, I am using vegetable glycerin to help the spray cover the toilet more evenly because it is an emulsifier and a thickener. I still want the liquid to come out of the spray cap though!
