Essential oils are produced by plants and are natural deterrents to bugs. I will always opt for these to avoid the use of DEET. Some of the best essential oils to keep away insects are Lemongrass, Basil, Lemon Balm, Lavender, Peppermint, and of course, Citronella.

The EPA has categorized Citronella as a “biopesticide” which means it controls pests by “non-toxic mechanisms.” Biopesticides are derived from natural materials such as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals.
Citronella is a grass plant grown in Asia. The oil is obtained by steam distilling the leafy parts of the plant, Cymbopogen nardus. It is a staple for outdoor products such as candles, sprays, lotions, and other camping and outdoor essentials. Bring your diffuser outside and fill it with Citronella! No electricity outside? Try a battery-operated diffuser instead!
Diffusing outside will keep biting critters away, but the lemony scent will also freshen up indoor spaces. Citronella has cleansing properties for the immune and digestive systems, the air, and the brain. Emotional benefits include assistance with removing negative emotions like sadness, anxiousness, and anger.

An excellent way to use Citronella is to apply it along the spine. This will strengthen thoughts and refocus the mind. It can assist in removing brain fog, indecisiveness, and irritabilities.
Its fresh, citrus scent makes a pleasant addition to perfumes and cosmetic products.
