Spring Make and Take

I had wonderful opportunity to meet new people during a “Spring Make-and-Take” at another local library. At the Plaistow Public Library, participants made three DIYs that they were able to take with them that night: Changing Seasons Roller, Cuticle Oil, and Upholstery Freshening Spray. (And I forgot to take pictures of the room and projects!) Here are the recipes for the projects featured in this class and links to where you can find the supplies!

Upholstery Spray, Changing Seasons Roller, and Cuticle Oil

Changing Season Roller

Rollers are one of the easiest ways to use essential oils. Plus, they’re portable! You can make your own combination to give your body and mind whatever assistance it needs in the moment.

My general recipe for a roller:

  • If using a 5ml roller bottle, use approximately 15-20 drops of essential oils. Then top with a carrier oil.
  • If using a 10ml roller bottle, use approximately 30-40 drops of essential oils. Then top with a carrier oil.
  • My carrier oil of choice is fractionated coconut oil. I find it goes on smoothly and is clear and odorless. Other choices could be apricot seed, jojoba, or really whatever you want!

The combination of Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint works great for the changing seasons. The recipe for this 5ml roller bottle is 5 drops EACH of Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint. Then it was topped with fractionated coconut oil.

To use: Roll as needed across the bridge of the nose (being careful to avoid the eyes!) Also, roll on the chest and the neck.

Cuticle Oil

I find that my skin is at its driest during March. It’s been zapped of moisture every day during the colder months, despite regular application of a cream. I think at this point there is no reserve left!

Lavender and Cedarwood are so soothing for the skin, and they help nails look their best as well. For this class, a 2ml roller bottle was used, but a smaller size dropper bottle would also work well.

The recipe for the Cuticle Oil is 3 drops Lavender and 3 drops of Cedarwood in the roller bottle. Then top with jojoba oil for the carrier oil. Jojoba oil is golden yellow in color and has a high Vitamin E content. It is actually very similar to the oil already produced by your skin. Jojoba is excellent for softening and calming the dry cuticles around the nail beds.

Upholstery Spray

It is a natural feeling of the spring season to clean and declutter. We want to give freshness to our living spaces! Using a homemade spray is a great way to do this!

Please be aware of the commercially available sprays that are marketed for this purpose! They contain so many chemicals and synthetic fragrances that can be irritating to not only the most obvious organs, the skin and the lungs, but they can wreak havoc on our other body systems as well. I do not like them, and I never use them. Yes, I feel very strongly about this!

My general recipe for a spray:

  • For a 1ml spray bottle, add 15 to 20 drops of essential oils. Then fill the remainder with water.
  • For a 2ml spray bottle, add 30 to 40 drops of essential oils. Then fill the remainder with water.
  • Adding a splash of vodka or witch hazel to the bottle will help the oils and the water mix better.

Today, the upholstery spray recipe will be 10 drops of pine and 5 drops of lemon in a 1ml bottle.  Add a splash of Thieves Household Cleaner, if desired. Pine and Lemon are a classic cleaning combination! Thieves Household Cleaner is a non-toxic and plant-based cleaner that smells amazing and can clean almost anything in your home! It’s all I use in my house. You can check out Thieves Cleaner here!

I hope you enjoy these Spring themed recipes! Feel free to experiment with different oils to make other scent options, too!
