Pumpkin Hummus for Mabon

Happy fall!

Mabon, or the fall equinox, celebrates the second harvest. The axis of the earth tilts so the sun hits directly over the equator. This gives equal time to light and darkness on this day.

Apples, pumpkins, vines, gourds, corn, pinecones, and seeds are harvest symbols of this holiday. With the changing leaves, it’s easy to understand why Mabon’s colors are reds, oranges, and golds. Celebrate with herbs and spices such as cinnamon, clove, sage, nutmeg, rosemary, and frankincense.

Autumn is a time of gratitude and balance. Show thanksgiving for the fruits of the harvest grown during the warmer months that have been gathered to carry us through the upcoming colder ones. The days of light are behind us while we prepare for the darker ones ahead. We may also have planted seeds that have matured now in many areas of our lives–home, work, family, personal growth. We should use autumn as a time of reflection to appreciate what we have accomplished and then to plan our next steps in moving forward.

Pumpkins are commonly used during Mabon because they symbolize the abundance and bounty of the harvest season. Try this pumpkin hummus and set your intention for the autumn ahead while you make it!
