The Hudson Pants

Oh, The Hudson Pants!  So popular in the indie sewing community, this pattern by True Bias is frequently mentioned on sewing blogs/websites/podcasts.  Fabrics appropriate for use in sewing the pants are hashtagged on online stores.

The Hudson Pants are my first printed pattern purchase by an independent pattern maker (aka, “indie”).  They come with a cute instruction booklet that provides clear step by step directions with illustrations.  For me, this pattern had a bonus!  I sewed with a 3/8 inch seam allowance which is a switch from the excessive (in my opinion) 5/8 inch seam allowance.  It’s a minor detail, I know, but I liked it!

I purchased the pattern about 8 months ago along with the fabric in that same time frame.  On a trip to New York City, I dragged my family to Mood Fabrics.  Yes, the famous Mood Fabrics seen in the television series, “Project Runway.”  I am in love with this show and have watched every episode from every season.  I bribed my daughters into going with the hopes of petting the canine mascot, Swatch.  Sadly, we were told he was away on vacation.  “Thank you Mood” for helping me find this comfy pink sweatshirt fabric!

So I held onto this project for too long.  I finally made a goal to complete these pants by my family’s ski/snowboard trip this February to Sunday River in Maine.  I finished the final stitching the morning of our departure.  What an amazing fit they have!  I thought the pockets would turn out bulky at first, but I’m glad I trusted in that instruction booklet because they do lay flat.  My fabric choice did work well with a snowy adventure because I was very cozy.  I did find the ankle slightly tight.  However, I may not have chosen a fabric with enough stretch or I made a mistake in the layout when cutting out the pieces.  It is something I will experiment with in my next pair because I am definitely making The Hudson Pants again.  And again…..
